Great Villas of Hungary

Book focused on architectural works of villas and residencies arisen in Hungary.

Publication Great Villas of Hungary was elaborated by a five-member research group led by Prof Antal Puhl, DLA. Each of them is well-known and acknowledged representative of professional research and analysis (in architecture, history of architecture and/or art history).

Introduction to the book gives detailed information on the timeline of modifications of the „villa” concept from the beginning up to present. Chapter 1 – wtitten by András Szalai, architect and art historian – provides a review overarching from Roman villas to Baroque ones, with numerous examples. Chapter 2 – compiled by Katalin Marótzy, art historian – covers period of time from Baroque to Eclectic villas. Chapter 3 – composed by András Ferkai, architect - tackles buildings belonging to villa architecture of the era between the two World Wars. Chapter 4 – created by Csaba Masznyik, architect and architectural writer – analyses villas built between the 1950s and the change of regime; and chapter 5 – written and edited by Antal Puhl – presents a selection of villas constructed from the 1990s up to the present.

The book reviews in details formal and functional changes of Hungarian villas. It means that up to the Eclecticism in Hungary villas had been built adjusted into the significant European streams. Between the two World Wars Hungarian architects tried to follow modern architecture abroad. Uncertainty of the after-war period became dissolved only after the political changes, when majority of Hungarian architects wished to contribute to a kind of regional architecture.
